Saturday sports in the 6ème

On a lazy Saturday afternoon we spent half an hour watching rival sporting events taking place in Place du Maréchal Lyautey.

One group were playing Molkky- a game involving skittles and throwing stick that we bought our eldest son for his birthday. He confirms it is a very addictive game.

Molkky – the new kid on the block

The other group were playing the more traditional French pastime of pétanque. Both games seemed keenly contested.

Boules or pétanque depending on your preference

Joyeux anniversaire

Everyone’s favourite chocolatier and tea room Bernachon is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

That’s a lot of chocolate to have been sold and devoured by customers in Lyon and Paris.

According to the website, it all began in 1953, when Maurice Bernachon wanted to transform raw cocoa beans into chocolate.

He did a pretty good job and I highly recommend a trip to Lyon’s most famous chocolate shop.

Maintenant c’est le tour des Kiwis

This week it was the turn of the All Blacks to make their presence known in Lyon.

Some arrived by boat

The pubs were full of rugby fans – well actually they were watching the Ryder Cup.

Actually this one was mine
Others adopted some French fashion
Confidence was high ahead of the match

The game went well for the fans. Very well. The fans will be sticking around as their next game is on Thursday against Uruguay.

Marché de la mode vintage à la Sucrière

We had never been to the Sucrière before so we decided a trip to the vintage market was a way to break this duck.

La Sucrière is an old sugar warehouse but is now an events space.

It’s pretty big
Beaucoup de sacs a main
Tellement beaucoup
Les lunettes du soleil
C’est quoi ces choses là?
Some original features?
Even a spot of tarot reading

We left empty-handed but it was nonetheless a fun day out.

Les Gallois et les Australiens sont en ville

From Bridgend to the 6eme

Lyon is filling up with Welsh and Australians ahead of tonight’s big clash in the rugby World Cup.

We bumped into this couple enjoying a beer before lunch at Brasserie des Brotteaux – excellent choice.

These two snazzily dressed Australians were on the T1 tram.

It’s safe to say the town centre was full of red and yellow.

Here come the Welsh
Time for refreshments
Have flag, will drink

There is a fanzone in Place Bellecour so we went to have a look.

Some Aussies in Place Bellecour
Even the tram stops were ready for the fans!

As Nathan was in town and keen to see a football match we went for the first time to the Groupama Stadium to see Les Gones – the boys in Lyonnaise dialect.

It’s been a difficult start to the season for OL – bottom of the league, new owners, their manager Laurent Blanc (great French pronunciation guide example) sacked.

Pre-match build up was very good

What better way to get back to winning ways than against newly-promoted Le Havre?

Les bad gones

The pre-match build up was fantastic, the ultras in the Kop Virage Nord were very impressive with their choreographed singing and clapping.

However the match was a disappointment. It was clearly a basement battle. Lyon were bereft of ideas. The sooner new manager and old boy Fabio Grosso starts the better.

Lyou met a lot of fans
