Moving to France and adapting to life in Lyon
Birdwatching in France
I went for another stroll to Parc de la Tete d’Or and saw plenty of very tame oies cendrees. Some were even eating des gauffres.

And of course des cormorans.

So, do you remember this photo from the other night?

Well, I returned to Rue Polycarpe for a closer look. It is a gorgeous art shop with lots of images of Lyon featuring les oiseaux.
The owner told me she designs all of them.
So I bought this:

And then I saw this:

I told the owner I worked at Euronews and she told me she lives on the hill on the other side of the Saone but left the green cube out of this picture.
I said I thought the cormorant was the bird of Lyon as I’d seen so many of them. And I asked how you say cormorant in French. Cormoran.
I said au revoir and assured her I would be back. That’s two bird pictures in the flat and I’ve only been here three weeks.
A colleague invited me out for a few drinks tonight so an evening stroll into town gave me the chance to admire some night-time views.

On my way to the venue, I walked past a shop selling some Lyon artwork. This one caught my eye.

I decided to make my first journey to work by bike. Lyon has a lot of Boris-bike-style bikes and an app that makes it very easy to use.
Or so I thought until I tried to ride one this morning. I couldn’t get it to work and ended up in my usual dash for the tram.
While on the tram I worked out what was I doing wrong. So was ready to try again at the end of the day.
During the day, I looked out of my office window and saw a cormorant dive under the surface of the Saone and come back up with a big fish in its beak. In my old job I was based in the basement with no view at all, now I have real life wildlife to gawp at.
At the end of the day it was time to try again with the hire bikes. The app worked, I unhooked a bike – you get to choose which one you want by looking at their ratings!

My route home took me along the banks of the river Rhone with some pretty decent views. I had to keep remembering to cycle on the right but other than that it was fine.

Quite a pleasant commute. Might try it again.

Look what I just missed by a matter of weeks. Lyon’s answer to the RSPB’s big garden birdwatch. At least I know there are other birders nearby.
So after a week at work it was now time to explore. First I needed to join a salle de sports. With all these pastries I’ve been treating myself to it was time to do some excercise.
There is a branch of Neoness fitness right opposite the flat so I ventured in to try and join. It was a challenge for my French but after a free trial session I managed to enrol – although there was some confusion over the RIB – a bank account number in France which turned out to be the same as an IBAN in the UK so we got there.
Then it was off to Parc de la Tete d’Or. Recommended by my colleague Ali – who knows I like birdwathching – so I took my jumelles and headed there.

I wandered around – along with most of the rest of Lyon – as it was a lovely sunny day. People were playing boules, I saw plenty of birds – herons and cormorants and some greylag geese. And there was a woman cracking a whip repeatedly. I wasn’t the only one who found that strange judging by her admirers.

And as there is a zoo in the park I saw a family of giraffes as well.
On the way back home I passed a florists shop so popped in and bought a plant to make the flat a bit more homely. At least now I am not alone.

Wearing my brand new shirt I was ready to go.

A brisk walk to the tram stop and then we are off. Although – we weren’t. It came to an immediate screeching halt and I crashed into a woman sitting down. She screeched in pain and then I noticed she had her arm in a sling. Je suis desolé, excusez-moi madame-was the best I could offer.

Was this a bad omen? If it was then there was a good one just round the corner.
Among the bits of information scrolling through the screens on the tram such as: Comment porter un masque, Le meteo and #ilovetcl Instagram pictures there was one about the birds to watch out for in Lyon.

Now that has got to be a good sign right? And then we were there – at the green cube.

Everyone was very welcoming but there’s a lot to get my head around.

At the end of the day my new pass was ready for collection.

Euronews today released news of my arrival. The email is in both French and English so I was able to see the word numérique which I had learnt meant digital being used for real!
Very exciting. It was also good to see that I am:
un passionné d’ornithologie et un fervent supporter du Fulham FC.
That is important information for my new colleagues.
